Adrian Baxter Capitol set state speed records at Farrell High that still stand today.

Adrian, the 100-yard dash state champ in 1966 and 220-yard dash state winner in 1967, established records that will probably never be broken because of the change to the metric system a short time later. In his last high school track meet he won three events and set two records.

Also at Farrell, he was a 4-year letterman as a running back in football and won All-State honorable-mention honors.

After high school, Adrian served a tour with the Navy in Vietnam. In 1971, he accepted a full scholarship at Alcorn State University, Larman, Miss., from where he graduated in 1975 with a BA in sociology. In his first year at Alcorn, he won honors on the All-Freshman Team and was named Outstanding Football Recruit the first season. In 1972-73, he anchored the fastest 4x100-meter relay team in the country, a team that also included world record-holders Willie McGee and Jerry Sims.

He was the first individual in the United States to qualify

for the Olympic Trials in Eugene, Ore., for the 100-yard dash, posting a 9.4 at the Texas Southern Relays. Adrian's best times included an unofficial recorded clocking of 9.0 and an official clocked time of 9.2. His best-recorded time in the 220-yarddash was a 19.6 split on the half-mile relay, with a 20.2 on open dash time.

Written up in the 1972 World Track/Field magazine, he recorded the 8th fastest time in the world that year. He anchored the winning 4x100 relay team to victories at the Drake Relays and Texas Relays for two consecutive years at each. He made the All-Southwestern Athletic Conference track and field team.

He tried out for the San Diego Chargers in 1975, narrowly missing a spot on the team.
