Alphonso F. Mazyck was a football and volleyball standout at Farrell High School who moved on to a brilliant career at the U.S. Military Academy (West Point).
In high school football, he was a 3-year letterman, team co-captain and an All-Conference Honorable Mention. In 1976, he helped the team to the WPIAL Class AA Championship. Those were the days before the PIAA football state championships were instituted. In volleyball, he was a 3-year letterman, co-captain and All-Conference standout. The team won the conference championships and he was named Most Valuable Player in numerous tournaments in his career. The senior class president won many academic and athletic honors.
He earned his nomination to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point where he played football and volleyball from 1977-1981. In football, Alphonso was a 3-year letterman and won several game MVP awards. He was voted Best Team Linebacker from 1979-81. In volleyball, he was a 4-year letter winner and made numerous all-tournament teams. He also served as team captain. He also played baseball independently.
He was inducted into the Farrell Alumni Hall of Fame and is a member of the West Point Football Alumni and Eddie's Club (Northern Virginia Organization for Special Needs Athletes). He served as a Challenger Softball coach to help kids with special needs.
Alphonso retired from the Army in 2001, after earning many medals, ribbons and badges for meritorious service.
