Bruce Unangst
Bruce Unangst was one of the early stars of the illustrious Reynolds High wrestling program. Under legendary coach Neal Lineman, he compiled a 73-7-2 overall scholastic record, unbeaten in dual meets his junior and senior seasons. The first wrestler in Reynolds history to reach the state championships, he won 4 holiday tournaments, 3 section titles, 2 district crowns and 1 regional championship. In 1966, he was named Interscholastic All-American by "Amateur Wrestling News" as one of the top 50 matmen in the nation.
He earned Reynolds' "Most Improved Wrestler" in 1963, then was MVP in 1965 and '66. He was co-captain of the 1966 team, leading the Raiders to their first unbeaten season in school history.
Bruce also lettered for 2 years in track, and excelled in the classroom � named "Outstanding Student of the Year" from the area Optimist Club. He received a congressional appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy, but accepted a full wrestling scholarship to Pitt.
As a freshman at Pitt, he went undefeated and won the Naval Academy Invitational Tournament and Thadeus Stevens open tourney (named the 2nd Outstanding Wrestler out of more than 500 entries).As a sophomore, he was undefeated in the regular season, matched against some of the highest ranking teams in the country. He was runner-up in the EWIA (Eastern) Tournament and awarded Pitt's MVP award in 1968. Ranked No. 5 in the country, he was named NCAA All-American Honorable Mention.
Although injury and surgery curtailed his college mat career, he coached youth sports for more than a decade. He was founder/president of an adult tennis association.
