David "Suds" Sudzina was one of the all-time great basketball players produced by the legendary coach Ed McCluskey at Farrell High. He starred on the Steelers teams from 1973-75 and was a Mercer County All-Star selection and named All-Section 3 in the WPIAL.
In 1975, he was selected to play in the Colt Basketball Classic and was named Outstanding Slav Athlete that year. He also was named MVP of the Mercer County Jaycees All-Stars in 1975.
In '74, he helped lead Farrell to the WPIAL championship, but the team dropped a heart-breaker to Jeannette in the state semifinals. Although Farrell did not offer a baseball program, "Suds" was a standout in the American Legion League.
He went on to become an outstanding 2-sport star at Westminster College, lettering four years in both basketball and baseball. He was one of the top rebounders on the nationally-ranked Titans basketball team and also pitched a no-hitter in baseball. Titans' Coach Ron Galbreath pointed out that he was the first 4-year starter and letterman in Westminster history.
"Suds" was honored in 1979 as having the school record for career rebounds. The team was nationally ranked in two of his four seasons.
In baseball, he received a tryout with the Pittsburgh Pirates, throwing batting practice and being coached in the bullpen. His pitches were clocked at 98 mph.
He earned the Armstrong Scholarship at the school, excelling in sports while holding a 3.3 grade-point average. He was inducted into the Westminster College Hall of Fame in 1999.
"Suds" also coached youth basketball, baseball and football.
