Doug Weaver
Doug Weaver was a superb all-around athlete, but best known for his achievements in wrestling at Greenville High School.
In the days of only one division in wrestling, he reached the state championships at 154 pounds. That season in 1972, he broke his hand 3 days before the district tournament, but the team co-captain still managed to win district and regional titles and advance to state.That year he was a member of the undefeated team and finished his career with a 54-3 record. He was a 2-time section champion and 2-time Christmas Tournament winner. He was one of Greenville's first junior Olympic program champs.Doug started on the Greenville football team, was co-captain and an All-County honoree. He earned 8 high school letters.
He went on to wrestle at Penn State University on a full scholarship, where he started as a true freshman. After starting the year 3-1, a broken hand ended his season. As a junior, he finished second at Easterns and qualified for the NCAA Division I National Championships. He missed most of his senior year after a shoulder injury.
While working for the U.S. Forest Service, he ended up in Idaho and coached the local high school wrestling team. He team finished third in the state and had 2 individual state champs. He later helped his son coach 2 Idaho state championship teams and one 2nd place.
In his youth he played Little League, Babe Ruth and American Legion baseball, later coaching Little League and Babe Ruth in Idaho.In 1998 at age 44, he was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. But Doug drew on the toughness he learned in wrestling to battle on with the heart of a champion and is a true Mercer County Hall of Famer.
