A terrific all-around athlete, Dr. Carl Bell was one of the premier high school golfers developed in the area during the 1960s.
Carl starred in golf and basketball at Hickory High from 1965-67 and was named the school’s outstanding athlete as a senior. A three-year letterman in golf, he was undefeated in match play his senior year and qualified for the state tournament. He qualified twice for the Jaycee state golf tourney.
In basketball, he helped the Hornets to the District 10 championship in 1967 and was named first-team All-Mercer County. Carl scored 260 points his senior year and was outstanding on defense. The team finished 19-5.
He was the MVP of the Bessemer Holiday Tournament when he helped Hickory defeat Mohawk in the finals. He won a Hoyle Tournament Sportsmanship Award in 1967.
At Westminster College he shined in both sports before leaving his senior year for Pitt Dental School. He lettered in both sports and was the individual champion of the West Penn Golf Conference in 1968 and helped carry the Titans to the team title.
Carl was also an outstanding tennis player. He won the Meadville Area Doubles Championship in 1978 and twice won the Equitable Mixed Doubles Courts Championship.
He served as a Little League coach and coached basketball at Notre Dame School.
Carl still competes with his brothers in various golf tournaments.
