Dr. Louis Mastrian
Lou Mastrian is one of only a small number of athletes in Mercer County history to be part of two state championship teams.
He played basketball for legendary coach Ed McCluskey at Farrell High School from 1957-60 and was a valuable member of two state title teams in 1959 and ‘60.
His senior year as starting guard on the team that included fellow Mercer County Hall of Famers Brian Generalovich and Willie Somerset, he scored 287 points and was named All-WPIAL Honorable Mention.
Lou went on to play basketball at John Carroll University, Cleveland, where he was the leading scorer on the freshman team, averaging 20 points per game. He was named Presidents’ Athletic Conference Honorable Mention.
He was a top basketball and volleyball referee, working high school basketball district and state games as well as the Pennsylvania State Women’s Collegiate Championship Finals. In volleyball, he worked the NAIA Women’s College Volleyball Championship and state high school playoffs and finals.
He founded the West Penn-Ohio Collegiate NAWS (National Association of Girls and Women’s Sports) Volleyball Chapter, serving as president.
Lou coached 7th, 8th and 9th grade basketball at Farrell for 12 years. A long-time school administrator, he was inducted into the Farrell Alumni Hall of Fame this past year.
