Elton R. Brown was a phenomenal all-around athlete who shined in football, earning top honors in both high school and college.

He graduated from Sharon High School in 1980 after a brilliant athletic career where he was a standout running back in football and a fleet-footed sprinter in track and field.

Elton was a 3-year letterman in football playing for Mercer County Hall of Famer Jim Wildman. He gained over 1,000 yards in both his junior and senior years. His senior year, he led Sharon to a 5-5 record, the first non-losing season in 10 years for the Tigers.

He was first team All-WPIAL his senior year after being named second team as a junior. He was also the team place-kicker.

In track under legendary coach Chris Houck, he competed in the 100, 200, long jump and 400-meter relay. He was clocked at 4.4 seconds in the 40-yard dash.

He earned a scholarship to Clarion University where he starred from 1981-84. Named a first-team All-American, he was the school’s all-time leading rusher at the time with more than 3,000 yards. He earned the team MVP honors almost every game.

Elton was inducted into the Clarion Hall of Fame in 1998.

He went on to a coaching career under Mercer County Hall of Famer Lou Falconi at Farrell in 1986 and 1987, the team winning a WPIAL crown in 1986. He was also assistant coach in track at Farrell for Don Scarvel in 1987. He coached the West Middlesex midgets in 1995.
