George Dancu was a superb football and basketball player at Sharon High School from 1949 through 1951. But it was on the gridiron where he attained fame and a college scholarship.
He was All-WPIAL and All-State at end at Sharon and selected to play in the Pittsburgh All-Star Football Game. He was joined by another Mercer County Hall of Famer, Bobby Hoffman of Farrell, on the Western Pennsylvania squad.
George, who was co-captain of the Sharon squad, went on to play four years of varsity football at George Washington University, Washington, D.C., from 1952 through 1955.
He was selected as All-Southern Conference end in ’54 and ’55.
He was named honorable mention All-American end his junior and senior years. He was also nominated by the Associated Press as “National Player of the Week” for his play against undefeated University of Maryland.
After that game, The Washington Post stated “Dancu was GW’s top defensive player as he put up an impregnable stand at his end and several times broke through to toss Maryland backs for losses.”
George also served as a T-Ball coach and as a line official in Pop Warner football.
