At Thiel, he earned four letters in football, three in basketball and one in baseball. In football he was a center and linebacker.

After college he began a coaching career. In high school, he worked at Ellwood City (offensive line) for two years; East Palestine, Ohio (head coach), going 18-2 and winning two league championships; and Maple Heights, Ohio (head coach), posting an overall mark of 18-12 in three years.

He was offensive line coach at the University of Pittsburgh for two years, then worked four years as offensive coordinator at Miami (Ohio) University. He coached defensive ends for three seasons at Michigan State University, before leaving the coaching profession in 1976 to enter business.

He and his wife, Kay, provided a 1-for-2 matching grant for the Alumni Stadium facility at Thiel, a contribution amounting to $500,000.
