Gary Douglas
Gary Douglas was one of the top basketball players to come through the prestigious program at Kennedy Christian High School (now Kennedy Catholic).
A four-year letterman in basketball for the Golden Eagles, he is one of the leading all-time scorers in school history and was a main cog in setting the tradition of roundball excellence at KC that started his freshman year in 1986. A product of the Shenango Valley Parochial League, starring at St. Joseph's School, Sharon, the 5-11 Douglas was fledgling Coach Joe Votino's high-scoring point guard. His senior year he led the team to an appearance in the state championship game in 1990, following up on being part of the state title team as a key reserve player his freshman season in 1987.
When he completed his high school career, he was Mercer County's fourth leading scorer of all time with 1,472 points and at that time KC's leading scorer in history. Some 28 years later, he still remains as Kennedy's 5th leading point-producer and among the top 20 in Mercer County annals.
He had 72 double-digit scoring games at Kennedy and the team was 87-31 in his four seasons. He scored 45 points as a freshman, 356 as a sophomore, 534 as a junior in leading KC to one game short of another state appearance, and 537 as a senior. He was 2nd-team all-Mercer County as a sophomore and 1st-team as a junior and senior. He was 4th-team All-State as a junior and 3rd-team as a senior when he received the prestigious Hoyle Award.
He also lettered in baseball at Kennedy. He received an athletic scholarship from Gannon University where he was a 3-year letterman. He went on to coach elementary school basketball in Farrell and Sharon as well as Little League. He served as a board member and umpire in Sharon Little League.
