Marty Mattocks is one in the long line of basketball greats at Mercer High School, while he also excelled in running sports.

He was a 3-year starter on Mustangs hoop teams that posted an aggregate 48-23 record. He helped spark the team to the Mercer County and District 10 Championships in 1971. That club reached the state Final Four before losing to eventual state champ Midland. He scored 723 career points. The MVP of the Christmas Basketball Tournament in 1969, he was named 5th-Team All-State as a junior. He was honorable mention All-State as a senior although he missed 8 games because of mononucleosis.

In cross country, he was a three-year letter-winner as well as a 2-time state medalist. He finished 6th at state as a sophomore in 1968 and 3rd as a senior, still the best finish ever by a Mercer runner. The team won the District 10 title in 1970 and finished 2nd at the state meet, best ever in Mercer history. He also ran track for one season.

He went on to play basketball at Indiana University of Pa. and was a 3-year starter on teams that compiled a 51-24 overall mark. Mattocks led the team in assists for 3 years and had 273 career assists, third best in college history at that time. In 1974, the team won the District 18 championship and advanced to the NAIA Elite 8. The team was a District 18 finalist in 1975.

He played post-collegiate basketball in several tournaments and fundraisers. He also played in adult rec leagues. He coached and umpired Little League.He was inducted into the Mercer High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2007.
