Greg Slatcoff
While he was an outstanding all-around athlete at Richland High School in Johnstown, it was his great coaching career in Mercer County that landed him Hall of Fame honors.
After playing football at Slippery Rock University as a freshman in 1970 and winning a varsity letter in 1971, as a senior he was given the chance to become as student coach for the freshman team which inspired a long career as a mentor.
At Lakeview High School, he was an assistant football coach for 4 seasons and was head junior high coach for 2 years. In cross country, he served as head coach of both the boys and girls teams from 1980-85. The girls teams won 4 league championships and had 3 unbeaten dual-meet seasons. His teams placed 3rd in the district in 1982 and 5th in 1985. The 1980 boys team won the league crown. Three of his individual athletes qualified for the state meet. Overall he served for 24 years as track and field coach at Lakeview. As girls coach from 1975 to 1990, his teams went 104-21-1 in dual meets. The team won 3 District 10 championships and finished 2nd twice. The team won 8 Mercer County Championships and had a string of 36 dual-meet victories. He coached two state champs in that period - Mercer County Hall of Famer Ginny Wilson in discus in 1982 and Brenda Bindas in high jump in 1989.
Slatcoff returned to coach the girls team from 2004-11 and had a 65-14 record. The team won 4 straight Region 1 titles and a streak of 33 straight dual-meet wins. He coached 2-time state javelin champion Fawn Miller, who set a state record in the event. During his time the team sent 23 relay teams to state and 7 medaled. He helped run the Lakeview Girls Invitational Track Meet and coached his 1983 girls team in the Hershey Track and Field Games. He also coached Little League baseball.
He currently serves as a volunteer track coach and was inducted into the inaugural class of the Lakeview Athletic Hall of Fame in 2018.
