Jim Timmerman was one of the top basketball players to hail from Sharpsville High School and went on to leave a mark at Youngstown State University.

He was captain of the hoop squad at Sharpsville from 1957-60. He helped lead the Blue Devils to two Mercer County Class A Championships with overall records of 16-9 and 20-3.

He was the team’s leading scorer in 1958-59 with 353 points and tallied 35 points in one game. He led the 1959-60 team with 290 points and was the MVP of the Hoyle Tournament of Champions in Sharon.

He was also a starter on the Sharpsville baseball team from 1957-60 as pitcher, shortstop or first base.

Jim earned a full basketball/academic scholarship to Youngstown State where he was a letterman and co-captain.

He was the team’s third leading scorer and named the best defensive player. He was a key member of the 1962-63 and 1963-64 of NCAA Small College Tournament teams.

The 1963-64 team posted a 24-3 mark, the best record for the Penguins in history at that time. That team was ranked fourth in the nation by UPI.

Jim was chosen for the Little All-American Honorable Mention team.

He played independent basketball in Ohio and later coached Little League, Babe Ruth and travel baseball teams. He also coached elementary and middle school basketball travel teams.

He was inducted into the Sharpsville High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2018.
