Jim Mondok was an outstanding basketball player at Hickory High School who went on to a brilliant, record-scoring career at Thiel College in Greenville. He played basketball at Hickory in 1963-64 and was the second-leading scorer for the Hornets where he teamed with top scorer Gary Tincu (by 3 points over Mondok) to lead the team to a 3rd-place finish in the rugged Mercer County A-B League. That marked the first season for new coach Ed McGumphy.
But it was at Thiel where Jim really shined. He played basketball and baseball for four years, 1964-68.Jim was named All-Presidents' Athletic Conference in basketball in 1965, '66 and '68. He was the first freshman ever to make the All-PAC squad.
He was the conference scoring leader in 1966 and set the Thiel career scoring record that lasted several years.
In 1968, he also was named All-PAC in baseball as a pitcher. He also participated in golf.
Jim was inducted into the Thiel College Athletic Hall of Fame.He served as a PIAA basketball official from 1986-96.
