John Paul Cascio Sr. was one of the great athletes produced at St. Michael’s High School in Greenville.
A 1963 St. Mike’s grad, he shined in basketball and football. He was a four-year letter winner in football. He served as team captain in 1963 and was named to the All-Erie Diocesan Team in 1961 and ‘62. A three-year letter winner in basketball, John was a member of the 1962 state runner-up team and the 1963 state champions. He was named to the All-Erie Diocesan team in 1962 and ‘63. He was team captain in 1963 and won the foul shooting award. He competed in the Hoyle Tournament.
He played basketball his freshman year at St. Bonaventure and scored more than 100 points. He played in the Racket Club League in Ohio and the Greenville Rec Center League.
He played baseball in Little League and Babe Ruth League and helped his teams to league championships in both. He had a tryout with both the Cleveland Indians and Pittsburgh Pirates.
He was an outstanding softball player. As a member of Ray Cooper Roofing, he helped the team to three state Class A championships and three runners-up finishes. The competed in the national championships in 1973.
He also played with other teams, winning several state and league honors. John coached 5th & 6th grade basketball at St. Michael’s, Greenville Little League and Reynolds Pee-Wee football. He served as an assistant basketball coach at Reynolds High girls team and as junior varsity basketball assistant at Kennedy Catholic High. Several KC teams won District 10 championships at the varsity level.
He also was assistant girls coach at Commodore Perry High.
