John Kokoski was an outstanding track performer at Ambridge High School in the early 1960s, but it was in coaching that he made his mark as a true Mercer County Hall of Famer.
He started the cross country program at Greenville High School in 1968 and continued to coach boys and girls through 1994. He produced several top flight individuals.
He also coached boys track and field at Greenville from 1971 to 1993, assisted by Doug McElhinny, Gary Hull, Bill Reames, Kelly Jones as well as junior high school mentors Fred Kiser and Terry Cooper.
John’s team won many countywide honors and swept 10 District 10 championships. His Trojans won the PIAA State Team Title in 1983. He coached one individual state champion in cross country and 7 individual track and field champs: 300-meter hurdles (1), 800 meters (2), 3200-meter run (1) and javelin (3).
He also mentored several relay teams that won PIAA crowns. He coached numerous other talented individuals who won place medals in 15 of 18 events.
John served as chairman of the board of directors for the Erie Extension Canal Museum.
