John McClure was a top all-around athlete at Grove City High School in the 1940s.
He was a three-year letterman in football and finished second in the county in scoring in 1947, despite missing games due to injury. As a linebacker, he led the team in interceptions in his senior year—including four in one game against Franklin's Ted Marchibroda. He scored four touchdowns in his final high school game and was named to the District 10 All-Star football team.
He was a member of the 1945 District 10 championship team.
An outstanding basketball player, he was selected to the Mercer County All-Star team in 1947-48.
He went on to Lock Haven State College in 1948-49 and lettered in both football and baseball, while also competing in basketball and wrestling.
He played semi-pro football for the Butler Cubs in 1950-51. He played semi-pro baseball with the Grove City Bobo Eagles, Fredonia Seidle and Grove City CIO. John also played for No. 5 Mine team and he played and managed the McClure Realty team that was runner-up in the State National Baseball Congress Tournament.
His teams won numerous league titles and he was selected to many league all-star teams at shortstop and led the leagues in stolen bases numerous times. He tied for the home run championship of the North County League.
John was a PIAA football, basketball and baseball official for more than 25 years and managed, officiated and sponsored youth sports for 20-plus years.
