Keith Miller was a stellar athlete at Hickory High School in football and wrestling, who went on to an outstanding career as a high school coach.
He graduated from Hickory in 1970. In football, he was an all-conference center as a junior and captain and all-conference tackle his senior season for the Hornets.
But it was in wrestling where he really shined. A three-year letterman, he was team captain his final two years. After winning a section title as a junior, he came back his senior year to win section, district and regional titles before losing in the PIAA state heavyweight finals by the thinnest of margins, an overtime referee's decision.
He went on to Clarion University, where he wrestled for four years and played football for one season.
After graduation from Clarion, he became a teacher and wrestling coach at Lakeview High. He coached 11 years, the last nine as head coach. His record at Lakeview was a superb 124-32-4. Team highlights included: District 10 AA championship (1985); two Section 3-AA crowns (1984, 1985); undefeated season, 15-0 (1984); three French Creek Valley Conference titles (1983, '84, '85).
He was named Section 3-AA Coach of the Year three times and was recognized by District 10 wrestling for 100 victories. He coached 21 section champions, two district champions, two regional champions, five state qualifiers, one state champion and one runner-up.
He also coached in the football program for 12 years at Lakeview, one season as co-head coach (1994). He coached elementary and junior high basketball for 5 seasons, posting a 47-7 overall mark.
Keith served as a baseball coach in the Lakeview Knothole League for 15 years, mentoring at all levels from T-ball through American Legion. He was vice president of the league for eight years.
He also served as a PIAA wrestling official for 16 years.
