Kirk Scurpa never had a chance to play baseball at Sharpsville High School because they had no varsity teams prior to his graduation. But he returned to his alma mater to make sure that others who followed had outstanding careers.

Scurpa played basketball for one season at Sharpsville in 1984, but his illustrious sports career actually began on the baseball diamond at Slippery Rock University. He excelled as a pitcher at The Rock from 1986-1989.

In 1989, he was named All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference and was honored as the Northeast Region Pitcher of the Year. He was also named to the Converse All-American 2nd Team that season.

Scurpa was tied for 12th in the “most victories” category of the PSAC 1989 Division II All-Americans. His senior year he had an earned run average of 2.61 in posting a 9-4 record. He led The Rock to a third-place finish in the College World Series in Montgomery, Ala., that season.

After college he went on to play Mercer County AA League baseball and helped his team to two league titles.

He also had a tremendous impact as a baseball coach at Sharpsville. His teams won 11 Mercer County Athletic Conference titles and 4 District 10 crowns. His 2000 squad won the Western Regional championship.

Today he serves as principal at Sharpsville High School and is a member of the board of directors for PIAA District 10, which includes Mercer County, and PIAA Board of Directors, both as junior high representative.

He has also coached Little League Senior Division and AAU Basketball.
