

Matt Gentile was an award-winning wrestler and football player at Reynolds High School, part of the strong Gentile sports family.
In football, he was third team All-State (AAA-AAAA) defensive end in his senior year and first team MVP of the Mercer County Athletic Conference – the first time a lineman ever earned the honor. He was team captain that season.
As a junior he was also first-team All-Conference at defensive end and tight end. A three-year letterman, as a sophomore he helped the team win the District 10 AAA Championship, beating Titusville.
As a wrestler, he was one of the state champions produced at the mat powerhouse school. In 1992 he won the PIAA title at heavyweight to cap off a great career. That season the Raiders finished as state team runner-up. He competed in the annual Challenge of Champions between AA and AAA state winners.
Matt was first-team All-Mercer County Athletic Conference in 1991 and ’92. He was District 10 champion in 1990 and regional runner-up in 1991 and 1992. He served as captain his senior season and was a three-year letter winner.
He competed in track his senior year in shot put and discus.
Matt went on to play football at Edinboro University and was a 1996 All-American honorable mention defensive tackle in Football Gazette listing. He was first-team All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference at defensive tackle in 1995 and 1996 as well as second-team All-Region in ’96. He helped the team to the PSAC Championship in 1995 (9-2 record).
In his younger years he played Little League baseball and competed in arm-wrestling in the footsteps of his dad, Jim.
He was inducted into the Reynolds High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2010. He coached Greenville elementary wrestling and Little League.
