Randy Holloway was an outstanding all-around athlete at Sharon who went on to a brilliant college and pro football career.
He shined in both football and basketball at Sharon, earning All-State selection in both. In basketball, he made an immediate impact his sophomore year
when he scored 244 points as the Tigers tied for second in WPIAL Section 3.
As a junior, he drilled in 399 points as the team went 20-2 in the regular season and won the Section 3 title for the first time since 1958. However, the
team lost to General Braddock in the WPIAL semifinals and then again fell to the same team in the PIAA quarterfinals, finishing 23-4.
His senior year he ripped the nets for 322 points as the team went 18-4, but the two league losses were to Farrell and the squad failed to make the playoffs.
But it was in football where his future lay as he earned All-State honors. He started on the defensive line as a sophomore for the 1971 squad that stunned the Tony Dorsett-led Hopewell squad, 19-6. He started both ways on the line for the 1972 and 1973 teams.
He was heavily recruited for several teams but finally settled on the University of Pittsburgh, where ironically he joined up with Dorsett. Randy had
a spectacular career for the Panthers on the defensive line, where he was named a first-team All-American. He played a major role in the success of the undefeated 1976 Panther team that was named National Champion.
He was drafted by the Minnesota Vikings in the first round in 1978 and played seven seasons in the NFL, finishing up his final year with St. Louis.
He and sister Wanda again make Mercer County history, being the first brother-sister duo to enter the Mercer County Hall of Fame.
