Rhoda Smartz Carmody was one of the top athletes produced at Sharpsville High School who excelled in volleyball there as well as the college level.
Rhoda was a charter member of the first volleyball team formed at Sharpsville and won three varsity letters as an outstanding setter. She was first-team All-Mercer County her junior and senior seasons.
She matriculated to Allegheny College and was starting setter for two years. After her sophomore year she transferred to Duquesne University in the School of Pharmacy.
She was a walk-on to the volleyball program and was awarded an athletic scholarship as she was starting setter for two years.
She is believed to be the first Sharpsville grad to play volleyball at a Division I college.
Rhoda also ran track and earned another varsity letter at Duquesne.
She competed in the Shenango Valley Slo-Pitch Softball League and made the All-Star Team for four consecutive years as outfielder for McDowell Bank.
Rhoda served as president of North Allegheny Girls Volleyball from 2016-19.
She and husband Sean spent many years traveling and supporting their daughters in club, high school and college volleyball careers.
Her father, the late Jim Smartz, was inducted into the Mercer County Hall of Fame and they are a rare father-daughter duo to be enshrined.
