Rick Stuyvesant is best known for his phenomenal wrestling abilities, but he actually participated in three varsity sports at Greenville High School in the 1960s. He also competed in football (3 years) and track (4 years) for the Trojans.
He was a PIAA State Champion in wrestling as well as a three-time District 10 champion and two-time Central Northwest Regional champ. He was runner-up at state in 1962, before claiming the state crown in 1963.
Rick went on to a tremendous mat career at Moorhead (MN) State College where he complied a career record of 61-7-1 as a four-year starter. He was a three-time conference champion and a four-time NAIA All-American. He was a two-time NAIA national champion and NAIA runner-up.
He went on to compete in the NCAA Division I Championships and in 1967 he placed 6th to earn All-American honors. In 1968, he placed 5th in the Olympic Trials in freestyle wrestling.
After graduating from Moorhead he began teaching and became head wrestling coach at Fairview (Pa.) High School. He coached from 1972-80 and posted a record of 64-34 with several district champs and one PIAA state champ. In later years, he assisted with the wrestling and track programs.
He was inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame in 1983 and Moorhead U. Dragon Hall of Fame in 2005. He was inducted into the Fairview Sports Hall of Fame in 2007 and the Pennsylvania Wrestling Coaches Hall of Fame in 2010.
