Robert “Buddy” Martin was a superb basketball player at Sharon High School who went on to an outstanding career at Clarion State College.

Buddy was a standout for the Sharon Tigers from 1964-66 and in the 1965-66 season he led the team in scoring and was the top defensive player. He helped spark the squad to 10 consecutive victories at one point in that season.

He was honorable mention all-Section 3 and played in the annual Hoyle Tournament during his high school career. At Clarion, he played from 1966-1970 and was instrumental in the success of the team during that era. In the 1968-69 season he led the team in scoring with 297 points. Coaches described him as a player “who does everything well.”

He led the team to a second place finish in the Troy (Ala.) Tournament in 1968 and was named to the all-tourney team. As a member of the United States Army, he played basketball in Europe.

As a team leader of the Department of Veterans Affairs Readjustment Counseling Service, he has sponsored many combat veterans in competitive sporting events, including volleyball, basketball, softball, golf and bowling. He also served as coach/player for these events.

His cousins Randy and Wanda Holloway were inductees to the Mercer County Hall of Fame in 2008.
