Robert P. “Bob” Mayberry Jr. is the 2014 Posthumous Inductee to the Mercer County Hall of Fame.

Bob was one of the greatest football players produced in Mercer County history. At Hickory High School he competed in football and track. His senior season (1978-79) he was named first-team all-Northwest Football Conference on both the offensive line and at defensive end. Bob earned honorable mention All-State honors.

He went on to a brilliant career at Clemson University. He played offensive guard and tackle for the Tigers from 1979 to 1982, graduating in 1983. He was named to the Pre-Season All-ACC Team and won the Jacobs Blocking Trophy for the state of South Carolina in his senior year. He won numerous other Atlantic Coast Conference laurels.

At Clemson he was a member of the 1981 national championship team. He was an 11th round draft pick of the Seattle Seahawks in 1983. He was a member of the Clemson University Letterman’s Club and served on the board of advisers for the Meineke Car Care Bowl from 2005-2010.

He coached with the South Park Falcons for three years. In addition, he joined his father Robert, who had owned a highly successful automobile dealership in Hermitage, Mayberry Chevrolet, in the automobile business in South Carolina.

With huge support from family and friends and from Clemson faithful, the Robert P. Mayberry Jr. Endowed Memorial Grant-In-Aid was created to award scholarships to Clemson football’s unsung heroes – the team managers and trainers, given annually to cover the educational expenses of these students. The Mayberry Endowed Grant-in-Aid is about honoring, rewarding and remembering. And it is about building for the future for students, like Bob was, who serve others every day without expecting accolades.

Robert P. Mayberry Jr. died on July 10, 2012.
