Robert "Rube" White was a top all-around athlete at Sharon High School in the early 1960s.
He starred in both football and basketball for three years from 1963-65. In basketball, he was first-team All-Section 3 in 1965, receiving honorable mention all-state honors. He led the team in scoring that season with 260 points.
He was selected to play in the Western Pa. All-Star Game, teaming with Midland stars Simmie Hill and Norm Van Lier. He also played with the Mercer County All-Star team that competed in tournaments, including the Hoyle Tournament.
His sophomore year at the Hubbard Basketball Open, he was named most promising player as well as tourney MVP.
His senior year in football he earned 2nd-team All-Section 3. He set a record for longest touchdown in Tigers history when he returned an interception 104 yards against Hickory. At quarterback, he led the team in scoring with 7 touchdowns and 5 PATs.
Rube received a full scholarship to play football at the University of South Carolina. He played quarterback on the freshman team, then moved to defensive back where he played varsity for the next three years.
He also shined in Babe Ruth baseball and was named to the first-team All-Stars in 1961-62.
In racquetball, he won the South Carolina Senior State Championship and other titles. He taught the sport at three clubs from 1979-89.
An outstanding golfer, he won tourney titles including the Fort Jackson Senior Men's Championship in 1997.
He coached girls softball and boys baseball for several years, while refereeing men?s and women?s basketball as well as flag football. He was honored with the James L. Walker Jr. Award for outstanding service to the City of Columbia, S.C., in 1998.
