Tom Tingley began his phenomenal wrestling career at Lakeview High School, leading to outstanding mat success in college and international competition.
At Lakeview, he was a 2-year letterman in football and 3-time letter winner in track, while a district qualifier. But in wrestling he made his mark.
He was a 3-time Section champ, District 10 runner-up and champion, Northwest Region titlist and state qualifier. He posted 116 career victories before graduating in 1985 as captain. He was a member of the 1982-83 and 1984-85 FCVC championship clubs.
He received his appointment to the U.S. Air Force Academy and won 4 varsity letters as a 4-year Western Athletic Conference place-winner (4th, 3rd, 2nd, 1st). He was NCAA Division I championships qualifier his senior year as team captain and conference champ.
He went on to excel in Greco Roman and freestyle wrestling. He was a 4-time All-American in Greco and 4-time U.S. Open Nationals place-winner (8th, 7th, 7th, 3rd). He was a 1992 U.S. Olympic Trials qualifier and 1994 U.S. World Team Trials placer (6th). He was ranked 5th in 1995 USA Wrestling in Greco.
Tom was U.S. Armed Forces Championship medalist in both freestyle Greco (3 bronze, 2 silver) and freestyle. Also a 3-time European Forces champ (2 in Greco, 1 freestyle.
He served as U.S. rep on Counseil International du Sport Militaire Technical Committee, governing body for Military World Games, 2003-07, and Military World Championships in Turkey, Lithuania and India.
During his military career he was youth volunteer coach in wrestling, football and baseball. He coached junior high and high school wrestling and football at Lakeview Area School District. He also coached high school wrestling at Commodore Perry as part of a co-op with Lakeview.
He was inducted into the Lakeview High School Athletic Hall of Fame.
