Tony Mastrian was an outstanding athlete at Kennedy Christian High, but made an even bigger mark as a coach at Hickory High School.
At KC, he competed in track in 1968 and basketball from 1968-71. The team was the 1971 PCIAA Erie Diocese champion and Tony was a 1st-Team All-Erie Diocese Western Division unanimous selection that season.
He went on to Edinboro State College, Shenango Valley Campus, where he played basketball from 1971-73. He was the team's leading scorer, including 37 points in one game. He averaged 21.4 points per game and was selected 1st-Team All-Commonwealth Conference in 1973. He participated in slowpitch softball in Greenville with Ray Cooper Roofing and Eckley TV, and flag football in the Greenville Area League. He played in several independent basketball leagues and competed in 3-on-3 tournaments in 5 different states with his team, The Oldtimers. An avid golfer, he recorded 4 holes-in-one.
Tony went on to coach cross country at Hickory High for varsity boys and girls from 1976-2016. In 41 years he posted a 530-173 record. He coached 15 team region champions, 3 District 10 team winners and for 32 years the team was represented at the PIAA state meet, while 37 individual runners qualified for state. He coached 13 full teams that made it to state and produced 19 individual medalists, including the first female state champ from Mercer County.
He instituted the girls' program at Hickory, as well as The Hornet Harrier Cross Country Invitational. He coached basketball at Hickory for 28 years, 25 as first assistant (1975-2000) and 3 years as head coach (2000-2003). Tony also coached Little League baseball in Sharpsville and St. Michael's Basketball in Greenville.
