Walter McKeithan was one of the top all-around athletes produced at Farrell High School during the 1950s.

His athletic career began during his youth in baseball as he was a member of the Little League All-Star team and then the Pony League All-Stars. But it was in high school that his athletic ability really stood out.

From 1955 to 1959 at Farrell he participated in football, basketball, track and baseball. In football, he was named all-Mercer County and played on the Mercer County All-Star team against the All-Ohio opponent. He was named to both the United Press International and Associated Press International All-Star teams.

Because of his outstanding ability, he was one of only a few Mercer County players ever selected to the Big 33 team which recognizes the best players in Pennsylvania in all divisions.

He lettered in football at Virginia State University.
